Week 7: Middle School Jesus (Who helps you follow God?)

Luke 2:41-52
16. The Boy Jesus in the Temple - LK 2:41-52 (Locations - The Temple and Nazareth, April, 8 AD.)

Our story this week is simply a day in the life of Jesus. What makes this story special (beside the fact that it is in the inspired Word of God) is that here we encounter Jesus at twelve years old- middle school. Well maybe not middle school for back then, at age twelve Jesus would have just become a man. It would be at this time of becoming a man that you would begin working in your father’s trade. While there is much in this story to dig in and study, I would like to draw your attention to the first half of the passage. Mary and Joseph were traveling with what they would call a Minion (min-yon). A group of about ten families that do life together, help raise each other’s children and support each other spiritually. So, a minion is a group of families, but where is Jesus?

Who are the main characters in this story?
Summarize what each of the characters are doing?
Why do you think Mary and Joseph would travel a day’a journey with out checking on Jesus?
How would you have felt when you couldn’t find Jesus with the group?
How would you have felt at the end of day two looking around Jerusalem?
How do you think Mary and Joseph felt when they finally found Jesus?
Who is Jesus’s father?
Who’s business was Jesus involved in?
Who helps you follow Jesus?(Who is your minion?)

What question(s) do you have from these passages for our large group discussion tonight?

Mutual Community

For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.
Matthew 18:20 (NLT)

Which equation clarifies mutual community? Why?

me + Holy Spirit = mutual community
or
me + you + Holy Spirit = mutual community

Mutual community is not an ingredient of disciplemaking -it's how we make disciples like Jesus.

Agree or disagree: Jesus has called you to a personal relationship with him-not a private one. What does this mean for you?

How might mutual community change the way you study
God's Word, pray, love people and do all of life?

With whom are you currently experiencing mutual
community as disciplemakers?

SHARE: Who do you regularly study God's Word and pray
with as friends? Share today's study with them.
